The recently concluded Academy Awards made history as Kathryn Bigelow of “The Hurt Locker” became the first woman in Oscar history to win Best Director. It was also the first time that there were ten nominees for Best Picture. But the biggest news of the evening is that the top grossing film “Avatar” snatched only three awards compared to “The Hurt Locker” which won 6 out of 9 Oscars including Best Picture. And here are the full list of the Oscar 2010 winners.

Mo Twister Presents: The Ara Mina Video Scandal

Ara Mina (Helen Klenk Reyes in real life) is a sexy actress and singer from the Philippines. She is also trying her luck in politics this year. I think it’s in her blood since her father, grandfather and other family members (Mathay) are biggies in the political arena in Quezon City. She is reportedly running for a local position in the said city and I guess part of the plan is to have some extra media mileage by guesting in Television shows. Recently he graced Mo Twister’s show and the results was … (ok you better view the video below)

I’m tagging this as the Ara Mina Video Scandal since her replies in my opinion are really funny and scandalous. I don’t know if she was just overwhelmed by the host barrage of questions (in English hehe) or is she just unprepared. I hope that for the sake of her political ambitions (and maybe for her future constituents in QC too), she will do some readings and preparation before doing another guesting in a TV show.

NCIS LA: The Ampatuans Hollywood Exposure

On the latest episode of NCIS LA, the notorious clan of the Ampatuans got Hollywood exposure. A certain Simon Amputuan was involved in a multimillion dollar bid of a new biochemical weapon something that every terrorist’s organization in the world would like to get hold on to. In the episode the Ampatuans were linked with the Al Qaeda and Abu Sayyaf, two of the most notorious terrorists this part of the world.

The Filipino in me was saddened that we were once again placed in a bad spotlight but I don’t think the episode will not enraged us Filipinos (well except the Ampatuans). It goes to show that the international media is aware and is monitoring the Ampatuan Massacre. With the ongoing trial we need to be vigilant and hope that justice will be served.

Avatar, IMAX and Warcraft

Raven and I watched Avatar last weekend. I was very excited since this was my first time to watch a movie in IMAX. Our Avatar and IMAX experience was great!!! Hats off to James Cameron and his team. The movie really deserves its Golden Globe. And if I heard it right it’s the highest grossing film now, what an achievement!!!

Since I’m so into to the Warcraft lore, let me blog about Avatar and how I relate it to Blizzard’s Warcraft lore. At first I likened the Na’vi race to the Night Elf race in Warcraft. With the Na’vi’s 9-footer height, blue skin and great skill in archery, its very similar to night elves. Na’vi’s Hometree looks like the World Tree (Teldrassil). From my observation, Na’vi have great respect for nature and practices druidism. Their warrior’s choosing of Ikran (Mountain Banshee) is similar to the concept of shaman and companion animal choosing (I remember Snowsong’s choosing of Thrall in Lord of the Clans novel) although without much struggle on the shaman’s part. Neytiri’s taming of the Palulukan (Thanator) can be likened to Hunters skill of taming wild animals and Na’vi’s close kinship to a Pa’li (Direhorse) can be related to Warcraft character’s empathy to their traveling mounts. As for the humans, the technology can be likened to Terrans in Blizzard’s Starcraft game, but maybe I will create another post for it.
